Interest in the stars is rising, whether we’re turning to TikTok to find our #MoonPhaseSoulmate or checking our daily Co-Star horoscopes to plan our day – but a new study has shown how when you were born could affect your spending habits too.

Gemini season might be here but it’s Libras who are racking up the highest levels of debt, according to research from personal insolvency provider Carrington Dean.

People born in September and October are racking up debt levels of almost £17,000, based on an analysis on nearly 2,500 people in Scotland currently seeking help for their debt using a Trust Deed (TD).

With June’s Strawberry Moon taking place on 4 June, when the sun was in Gemini, the astrological magic is rubbing off this month. Geminis with a TD are typically around £3,400 less in debt than their Libra counterparts and have the lowest levels of debt amongst every star sign measured at £13,500.

While Cancer is known for craving security in all aspects of life, including their finances, this sign has the second-highest level of debt amongst all signs, at nearly £15,700.

Star sign debt levels revealed

Star sign Birthday Average debt level
Capricorn 22 December – 19 January £14,917
Aquarius 20 January – 18 February £14,218
Pisces 19 February – 20 March £15,061
Aries 21 March – 19 April £14,514
Taurus 20 April – 20 May £14,978
Gemini 21 May – 20 June £13,542
Cancer 21 June – 22 July £15,691
Leo 23 July – 22 August £14,997
Virgo 23 August – 22 September £15,113
Libra 23 September – 22 October £16,920
Scorpio 23 October – 21 November £14,882
Sagittarius 22 November – 21 December £15,369

15% of Brits believe sign impacts personality

It’s no surprise that Libras are more likely to spend, with beauty and pleasure a top priority for this star sign – but people living a champagne lifestyle on a lemonade budget could try to make some savvy swaps next time they’re tempted to splurge.

It’s trickier to predict a Gemini whose multiple personalities could see them splashing cash one day and being frugal the next. The stars are currently aligned, but setting a budget and having a savings goal will help to control any indecision in future.

Taurus signs are ruled by Lakshmi, goddess of wealth, fortune and power. When not giving in to luxe temptation, a Taurus is known to be an astute financial preserver. But with an average level of debt of nearly £14,980, Taurus star signs are neither the most nor the least in debt according to the study.

According to YouGov data, a third of Britons consider themselves to be spiritual and 15% believe that a person’s star sign genuinely impacts their personality.

See the future “without the need for a crystal ball”

No matter what their star sign, Layla Johnson, regional manager at Carrington Dean, urges everyone to be aware of their spending and seek help if they need it. She said:

“Getting into high levels of debt can have a significant impact on every aspect of your life, ranging from relationships to your health. Many people may turn to star signs to seek advice for problems like this, but we’d also encourage anyone – regardless of belief – to never be scared of seeking professional help if it feels like their finances are getting out of control.

“Some star signs may be associated with certain personality traits that could mean you’re likely to struggle with managing money. But, in this climate, the reality is that anyone could find themselves in a tricky situation, unable to keep up with costs and burying their head in the sand.

“Everyone in this study has entered a Trust Deed, which can help to take the pressure off even if you’re in thousands of pounds of debt, but there are other options too across Scotland including a Debt Arrangement Scheme. After taking the first step towards seeking help, many people feel very relieved and can start to see their future clearly, without the need for a crystal ball.”

Methodology:

The full research gathered data from Creditfix and Carrington Dean customers currently on a Trust Deed (TD), Debt Arrangement Scheme (DAS) or an Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA).

The statistics used in this press release were gathered from a pool of nearly 2,500 people in Scotland currently seeking help for their debt using a Trust Deed (TD), and then grouped by birthday to reveal their star sign.
